Felted Tweed Anyone? @RowanYarns Magazine 74 Part 1 - Felted Tweed My Way
WOW, My Magazine 74 subscriber copy arrived mid August - a good two weeks before the season release date of September 1! I love that Rowan offer a courier delivery option, because the mail hasn’t been that reliable since pre-Covid days. With Courier delivery, I know that my magazine is coming and what day it will be delivered! I make sure that I’m home and have nothing pressing in my schedule so that I can sit right down with a cup of tea and have a good look!
Magazine 74 does not disappoint! The first “story” - “Felted Tweed My Way” ! This broad mandate resulted in an amazing collection of Felted Tweed Designs! A couple of designs have added Kidsilk Haze in there - that’s all right, we love a good Felted Tweed/Kidsilk Haze combination yes?
While there are NO designs for men in this magazine, I think they are a few that can be knit as unisex designs….maybe just tweak up the shades used….or lengthen the body?
There are NO crochet designs in the magazine - sorry Crocheters!
Felted Tweed has been in the Rowan line up of yarns for 24 years now. Shades have come and gone but there is a “family feel” to the range of shades offered…..they all work together and it would be almost impossible to come up with a bad combination :)
My earliest shade card is from 2011 and it has 21 shades - now Rowan offer 56 shades - including some brights that Kaffe himself has added to the range.
22:00 My Felted Tweed Project Collection
In addition to a review of the “Felted Tweed My Way” designs, I’m going to show you all of the items that I’ve knit/crochet using Felted Tweed….a little stroll through my knit closet :) I hope you’ll stay tuned and join me as I go back through my knit history :)
39:30 Mosaic Swatching
ALSO, Gully by Lisa Richardson is done using the mosaic technique of colourwork, which I am not at all familiar with - so I’ve done a swatch and let’s have a look at that in this video also.
There is a second story in Magazine 74 - to introduce “Fine Tweed Haze”. I’m going to save that for part 2 of the Magazine 74 review - because I have some of this yarn on it’s way to me and I want to play with it before giving my opinion :) So stay tuned for part 2 of the Magazine 74 review!
That’s all knitters (and crocheters). Thank you for dropping by Life LDC Knits and watching my latest video. Please Like and Subscribe (more than 50% of my watchers are not subscribed - what’s with that?) I read ALL the comments and try to respond in a timely manner….so let me know what you think of Magazine 74 ok?
Have a great day!

Turn the music off! It's too loud!😮
I have always enjoyed your videos... you haven't been posting for a little while... my daughter and I just want to make sure all is good and if you have plans on returning soon.
I think this is my favorite Ranunculus share! I can see you in many many more!
Missing your updates, videos and reviews. Hope all is well.
Hi Life LDC Been thinking of you, no new posts, hope all is well. :)
These pattern and magazine reviews are very helpful! Thank you!
Hello, can you please tell me what size needle you use for your Single strand Felted Tweed garments? I have Felted Tweed that I cannot get a fabric that does not look open and Lacy… I’ve had the same issue with a box set of Moordale. Can you give me any guidance ?
Hello there! I once did a class with knitters on gauge…..6 knitters, all with exactly the same instructions, needles and yarn….and all of the squares were totally different sizes! As a knitter, you know whether you knit loosely or tightly….so right away you might adjust from the recommended needle size to start your swatching. It sounds like you are naturally a loose knitter. You can go down as many sizes of needles as required to achieve gauge and get the fabric that you like. BUT, You also might want to consider looking at your technique. A lot of knitters don’t put any tension on the yarn when they knit…and so the stitches are really loose and open as you say. When your stitches are on the needle they should grip the needle…be able to move but not slip off, be grippy enough but still be able to move along as you knit. It’s a fine balance.
These design’s don’t appeal to me. They look dated.
Thank goodness we have so much choice in the knitting world yes? Not everyone will like everything…there is always something out there for every knitter!
@@AnneFeatonby very true.
Why don’t more yarn shop’s sell this magazine?
Only yarn shops that sell Rowan yarns :)
amazing!
Hi Anne I just wanted to say how much I appreciated your Rowan felted tweed blanket crochet along videos. My mum died last year leaving a whole stash of different coloured felted tweed which she'd used to knit hats, cowls and mittens. I wanted to use it up and also wanted to fill my time so I decided to learn how to crochet and use up the yarn. I googled patterns and found the Lisa Richardson blanket but it was only when I began that I realised how difficult it was. Your videos were an absolute lifeline - I must have watched each one of them about 50 times! I am making good progress and have found the whole thing absorbing and therapeutic. Thanks for your lovely instructions and calming tone! Kate
I’m so happy that you were inspired by your Mum’s stash to learn how to crochet! The Lisa Richardson blanket was a great project to learn with…..I was (and still am I think) a crochet beginner, but doing this blanket really taught me so much! I was teaching myself and hoped that in turn I could help others…..I’m glad they helped you! I hope you continue to crochet….and knit? Do you knit? If not, that could be your next challenge :) Take care Kate, Anne. !
@@AnneFeatonby Hi Anne - yes doing the blanket has taught me so much too. I'm just on the noughts and crosses panel now. I love knitting, mainly socks and Arne and Carlos dolls and mice! But now I'm finding crochet quite addictive. Just wondered whether you blocked the blanket once you started putting all the panels together or did you only block the squares at the start? Kate
@@katefoster4344 Hi Kate! I blocked each square before sewing it all together….crochet is so flexible that it really lay nicely after sewing. I’m so glad you are enjoying the process :) Anne
❤@@AnneFeatonby
Hi Anne just to let you know I finished my Lisa Richardson crochet blanket using your instructions. Like you, I changed the pattern a little - I did two lots of the central section with the granny squares, blackberry salad and noughts and crosses. I joined them together with interlocking diamond panels and edged it with the pattern edging. I love how it has turned out. It took 6 months of hard work but so worth it! Thank you for all your tutorials - there is no way I could have done it without them. Kate
Thanks for sharing! I watched the Rowan video of the photo shoot today and wasn’t impressed (the model looked so awkward in the video!), but seeing the photos of the actual magazine, the knits and the model look lovely. Seeing so much Kidsilk Haze with Felted Tweed has inspired me to unravel my Easy Folded poncho in Felted Tweed which I never wear because I dont like the color on me. Again, thank you for your video. I do so love felted Tweed. ❤
Modelling isn’t as fun as we might expect, is it! To me she looked really cold and I think she had a black turtleneck under a lot of those garments :) I love my Easy Folded Poncho…..could you add a funnel neck to it in a colour to make it more flattering…either in Felted Tweed or Kidsilk Haze maybe? Just a thought….. But then, frogging it and adding some Kidsilk….you could tweak the colour for a garment. What colour are we talking about…..what shade would you add. Inquiring minds you know :) Anne
The color is Herb. I would add a color of KSH that might do something to take the yellow out of the green.
@@historical_lisa315 greens are tricky…..good luck with that……
Great to see you again. Enjoy your critique on the Rowan magazine. Love your beautiful crochet wrap. I purchased some sock yarn from Rowan and gifted the socks, may need to buy more.♥
There are lovely new shades in the Rowan sock yarn…any excuse to buy more yes? Thanks for watching Jeannine! Anne
Great to see you again Anne. Loved seeing your past knits...all of them beauties. Always good to hear your view on the Rowan magazine. All the best Linda.
👋 Hi Linda…..thanks for dropping by. Anne
Hi Anne, I thoroughly enjoyed your review of Rowan 74. My magazine came a couple of days ago and I followed along with you. I'm one who loves doing intarsia and there are some temptations in the current issue. I'm working on two projects right now that are using Felted Tweed. I'm doing the Field sweater in 185 Frozen and it's getting close to completion. I'm also doing Martin Storey's KAL blanket. It's Wednesday and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's release of square #5.
Ooh, I love that Frozen shade……it will be beautiful! My squares have stalled a bit as I have started Himalayas from Mag 74…..but it’s all good 👍 Intarsia….a challenge for me…..and I admire your passion for it……someone has to love it 🤣
@@AnneFeatonby- my Storey KAL will be a very slow project and I’m okay with it. I’m doing on block a week right now (as they are released) and will likely continue slowly. I plan to use a different color on rack block. I digressed slightly and have one more block done. I did the moose that some made. A moose reindeer? Lol
* on each block
I would add petals to the french knots on the brown sweater🌸
That is a good idea…….hmmmmm…thanks!
Hello Anne! Thanks for the review and tiptoe through Rowan’s new magazine! I have quite a stash of felted tweed and there were several things I want to do. Several of the older designs have been on my wish list for years. I must get to them! That dress “Lidiya” has been on my wish list for years!
We need a club…..Fans of Felted Tweed…..or Felted Tweed Anonymous? Lidiya is spectacular…..time to bump it up? Anne
Hi Anne. I loved your collection of felted tweed knits. You are a beautiful knitter. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the patterns, intarsia and mosaic knitting. Very helpful and interesting. 😍
Thank you so much! I hope you find a design that you want to knit! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
SOOOO enjoyed your tour thru the new Rowan magazine. I adore Felted Tweed and it was also very inspiring to see your collection of FT knits. Hope fall comes to your (and my) area soon. It's been the hottest summer I remember in the deep south and I was born and raised here in NE FL. Doesn't stop me from knitting but it's just more fun when you're not sweating thru the process. Happy September , happy knitting - Melody
I’m glad to hear that even in the south you enjoy the knits! Tricky knitting isn’t fun…..Autumn is on the way. I am swatching for Himalayas right now…..changing the colourway isn’t always easy…but I prefer cardigans as you can wear them all year round (air conditioning is a shock when you go grocery shopping in shorts and a sleeveless top right?) Take care, Anne
The granny squares shawl is beautiful! Please share any info on the pattern..where to purchase or do we just crochet the squares first and stitch them together? Thank you!
Let me check…ok, it’s available on Ravelry as an individual pattern….. ravel.me/frances-9 Hope this link works…..it’s Frances from Winter Knits. You make all the centres then join them together with a really light and airy crochet…..I love it and I hope you do too!
Thank you Anne for taking the time to look up the name of the pattern! It looks like a fun project, I'm sure I will love it!
Loving your review today. The top down ones, although lovely just aren't my cup of tea . I really went for the scarves though. I see 2 that I must make. Absolutely love that cover scarf Serac by Martin - think that will be going on my needles sometime next year - my one wish about it is that there would be a chart version of the instructions. I'm with you on Summit - it confuses me. Love your honesty about Boulder! Your Felted Tweed garments/projects look super. Love those Marie Wallin ones but haven't mastered Fair Isle yet.
Hi Gail, I am not a top down knitter either, but I can’t resist Himalayas with it being top down and steeked! I hear you with Serac…..I 💭……. I wonder if we nagged a bit :) Thanks for dropping by! Anne
Great review. There are so many things I would like to knit from this issue and I look forward to part 2. I will have to try Fever Tree's Pink Grapefruit as we go into summer, I have only ever had their tonic water in my gin 😀
Fever Tree Tonic is lovely and G&Ts aren’t the same without it. Do you have a favourite gin? I love Tangueray. Do try the Pink Grapefruit, it is refreshing!
Gorgeous as always! I love your videos, they are such a knitters delight,a real treat! There are several designs I'd like to knit, but realistically I'll have to narrow it down a bit😂 Thank you for this...I await your next one on the new Fine tweed haze 🧶 Happy Knitting 😃💖🧶🧶
It’s so easy to get carried away isn’t it Judy…..that’s why my stash is almost embarrassing….. oh my! I’m swatching for Himalayas…..I just had an idea, so will continue :) Can’t rush these things right? Have a great day, Anne
@@AnneFeatonby I'm really looking forward to seeing your colour choice Anne 😉🧶🧶🤔
Great review. Loved the colour work yoke sweater. Felted tweed is so nice in blankets. Thank you Anne 🏴
Hi Christine, I’m glad you enjoyed the review ! Felted Tweed is a fabulous all rounder yarn…good for gar, ents, great for accessories, and the blanked are so cosy. I’m doing the Martin blanket right now…..fun little bites of knitting. Thanks for dropping by! Anne
Thank you Anne for this great review about Felted Tweed which is one of my favourite yarns for stranded knitting. Now I' m curious about your video about Fine Haze Tweed, I love to wear my scarf done in Haze Tweed. Have a good time:-))
You are so welcome! My Fine Haze Tweed should be here tomorrow, I’ll be playing with it and will be able to share my thoughts on the designs soon :)
Hello Anne So nice to see you. I love your Rowan Magazine reviews. I too crocheted the blanket you have draped on your sofa. One of my felted tweed wips is the Jubilee blanket.
Suzanne! I love my crochet blanket! It was quite the challenge - in particular the stitch used to sew it together!!! Hahah The Jubilee Blanket is on my knitting bucket list!!!! Way to go! Anne
Thank you, Anne. The magazine is gorgeous. Excellent review. Fever Few is a lovely drink. Thank you so much for sharing your work. It is so beautiful
Thank you Valerie for dropping by! Do any of the designs tempt you ? Anne
Gracias 🙏 maravilloso!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Anne
Anne, I only found you today, luckily, as I am about to do my second intarsia sweater. After the first one, for my granddaughter, I wasn't sure I'd ever attempt intarsia again, it was so intense and involved many, many skeins of yarn. However, here you were with a first attempt at intarsia and a completely genius idea for knitting it! So happy, thank you so much for the tutorial, I can't wait to start my Flower Power pullover by Degen!!! Your scarves are absolutely gorgeous. I'm a subscriber now and am excited to catch up on your channel. Hugs🥰😍
Thank you for visiting and subscribing! I couldn’t find the Flower Power Pullover by Degen in Ravelry…..but if you can adapt it to knit intarsia the way i did for my scarf, that would be great. This technique is best for small areas of colour on a plain background (IMO) but hey, what do I know! LOL!!! Thanks again!
Sea Stars is fabulous ! I can't wait to see your progress and/or finish! You are always so inspiring and keep me engaged with Rowan patterns and yarns. I've always loved them but having to order everything on line and not be able to see colors or textures is a debbie downer. hope your summer is shaping up well. cheers!
Hello!!!!!! I’ve been enjoying my summer here and have been so negligent with the my knitting and my comments here, my apologies! I would suggest investing in a shade card - whilst they aren’t real snippets of yarn any more (bummer) they still do give you a better idea of the colours used. OR, do a search and look at the photos posted by yarn stores that have the real sweaters on display….because their photos are probably much better at reflecting the true colours……the photos in the magazines go thru the whole process of being tweaked and then the printing..so you know, aren’t always as reflective of the true shades as they should be. I do know that when I see a sweater in real life, it is SO MUCH BETTER than in the photos :)
Hi Anne. Love your socks. I'm an avid sock knitter - always have a pair on the needles. I do block my socks though. I find it straightens them out and improves the look of my often imperfect stitches. I don't have a set advent knitting plan - too often I'm finishing up some Christmas knitting for my family - but each year, I do like to hint to my husband that I'd like a kit from Black Sheep Wools for their annual Betwixtmas shawl pattern. He always obliges, bless him! The Black Sheep Wools Betwixtmas shawl is designed by a different designer each year and they put together kits of yarn to make the shawl. While it is designed to be knitted in the gap between Christmas and New Year, I often don't get mine started until the New Year but I always enjoy knitting the pattern.
The betwixtmas shawl sounds like a great idea! Your hubby is definitely a keeper! Thank you for dropping by….my apologies for not answering sooner…I’ve let the summer take me away here from my knitting and my video blogging….but I’m back (doing my review of magazine 74 right this minute) and look forward to an exciting, productive, autumn/winter knitting season! Have you got anything special on the needs for this new season Claire?
@@AnneFeatonby I am knitting Christmas socks for my family at present - using West Yorkshire Spinners sock yarn in Christmassy colours! Also hoping to start a cardigan by a designer from Donegal and have lovely Erika Knight yarn ready to skein for it. But I have been looking at the new Rowan autumn/winter patterns and there are several tempting knits there too! Choices, choices! Happy knitting to you Anne. x
Hello Anne. I have just recently discovered your UA-cam channel and am greatly enjoying your videos. Thank you for the correlated rib demo. So helpful, especially because you are a 'thrower' like me. So many of the colour work demos I have seen are done in the continental knitting style which I have tried but do not enjoy - and it really messes with my tension/gauge. So your clear explanation and demo was very encouraging and helpful. 💕
You are so welcome!
Best bucket hat ever!
Thank you :)
Love the Inshore Wrap, got the yarn but I think it will be awhile before I get to it.
I love getting a parcel from Rowan. Your cardigan is going to be sensational. I’m tempted to make one too. I’ll be following your progress. 👍😀
Nice to see you again. Beautiful socks. I just started knitting socks this year. I'm participating in the Farmer's Daughter Sock Squad. I receive a skein and mini each month. I've been choosing my patterns from 52 Weeks of Socks. It is gratifying to finish a pair a month. Love the hats. Looking forward to your next podcast and progress on your cardigan.😊
A sock yarn club would be great - good for you! Do you have a stash? Or are you the kind of knitter who buys and knits, buys and knits it up and doesn’t accumulate a “stash”. Just wondering :) Thanks for popping by Suzanne!
@@AnneFeatonby Oh I have a stash LOL. But I have been buying and started using stash almost everyother project. I'll buy yarn with a specific project in mind, but if I don't get around to knitting that project the yarn ends up working for my next inspiration. 🙂
Love the flower hat Anne! And the socks...great colours. Sea stars: I think if you lean naturally to a preference for the other colour rather than the rouge, then it will look just as good., and you might feel happier with it... and wear it more. Good to see you back. Best wishes Linda
Hi Linda! I’ve ordered more of the Cantaloupe and a blue and well, we shall see :) Thanks for dropping by!
I'm looking forward to following your progress on Sea Stars. I was immediately drawn to the cardigan. My one concern is that, in the photo, the armholes look very large. In my most humble opinion I would stick with the colors that are suggested in the pattern. For me, it's one of the things that drew me to the design. And, I think you could definitely wear rouge without problem.
Hmmmm, I have one of those colour chart things done back in the day when that was all the rage and it definitely isn’t my shade at all…..a friend looked at me when I held it up and said “rings all the red out in your skin” which isn’t something I want to do :) I’m still contemplating…..but thank for your thoughts :)
Love the socks. Thank you from Scotland 🏴
You are welcome!!
I think that I would have made the correction for the length in the toes so that the heels would look alike. Since I wear clogs that is important. Getting my sock yarn done in a tube is the only way my sock yarn will get used up also. I just can't get my sock knitting mojo back.
Now that is a brilliant idea Dawn!!!! I could make the toes and extra 3 rounds then start the shaping! If you decide to get your sock yarn cranked up - unwind a ball to be used as cuffs/heels and toes - then you can either use it on another sock as a highlight, or on the self same cranked tube. I didn’t do that and am left with quite a bit of cranked sock that I had to undo and then use up. Just a thought. The whole process of tube to sock is a bit tedious in itself….sometimes I’m happy to knit a sock, other times not…..
Awesome tutorial on the heel! I understand it now 🙌
That’s great!

Pardon ? :)
Can I ask question about your Kidsilk Haze piece ? It is gorgeous ! Did you block it ? I am using the fiber for the first time and loving it. Thanks for your input.
Hi Jan, I lightly steam blocked it….steam iron held over …. No pressure ….
Excellent narration!
Glad you liked it!
Hello, Sorry, I'm writing with a translator ☺️ I want to thank you for very interesting videos! You are awesome!
Glad you like them!
I forgot to tell you that I LOVE the intro. Very Bond-like. Great idea for the intro.
Thanks so much!
I think you will make Sea Stars by Martin Storey as your next project. That’s the one I would like to make. I’m having a hard time finding Rowan magazines though. Oh well, I can dream. Love your videos and I always look forward to another one. Take care.
